Mr Andrew Terry

Andrew Terry is a Senior Lecturer working for the Faculty of Medicine and Health, School of Dentistry at The University of Sydney. He has worked with both the Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) programs since August 2015.​

He is responsible primarily for the education of Periodontal instrumentation/Air Powder Polishing/Power Driven instrumentation /Exam screening and Oral Hygiene instruction education for both the BOH1 and DMD 1&2 year levels. ​

He has approximately 30 years’ clinical experience first qualifying as a Dental Therapist in QLD, Australia in 1993 and then as a Dental Hygienist in London, U.K in 1998. He ratified his Australian and U.K education in Switzerland with the Swiss red cross and attained the protected title of “Dip. Dental Hygienist of Higher Education” in Switzerland. He completed his Master in Education in 2019 and was accepted as a member of the Higher Education Academy in 2021. He has worked in Townsville, Brisbane, London, Zurich and is now based in Sydney. He will commence his PhD in 2026.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the indications and contra indications for AirPowder polishing application
  2. Put in practice the correct techniques for safe supra and subgingival Air Powder polishing using the correct powders
  3. Gain an insight into the various power-driven instrument types
  4. Put into practice the correct supra and subgingival power-driven instrument techniques with the piezonelectic tips.
  5. Understand the differences in patient and operator positioning ergonomics between managing the upper then lower arch.
  6. Undertake a brief review of the Modified Pen grasp and understand it’s importance for safe hand instrumentation.
  7. Undertake a brief review of safe and effective supra and subgingival scaling techniques
  8. Receive an introduction to the XP2 “Double Gracey” Curettes and where they should be used safely using the correct technique.
  9. Learn how to “Design your own instrument” using the American Eagle “Quick Tip” technology.
  10. Understand and implement the correct isolation procedures when undertaking Zoom in chair whitening.
